Securing remote work is still a key challenge

We often encounter an opinion stating if everything is running smoothly within the IT network, the administrator has truly little work to do...

On the other hand, however, when any IT-related problem arises, the administrator is the only one who is the most reliable and responsible person we come to for a solution.

The Administrator’s daily work is faced with a number of challenges. But above all, it has to ensure continuous and smooth operations of both the IT equipment and the business services under all conditions, says Marcin Matuszewski, Senior IT Support Engineer at Axence, the IT management and security solution producer.   

REMOTE WORK IS THE MAIN CHALLENGE   

Today, the main challenge for network administrators in many companies around the world is to support remote work due to the current coronavirus pandemic. A lot of employees request for remote work assignment on their own initiative, but a large number of companies now consider home office as a standard policy of operation. According to Gartner research, as many as 88% of organizations worldwide have implemented mandatory remote work or encouraged their employees to do so. Many companies introduced hybrid work mode and perhaps it will stay with them permanently. Despite the relaxation of the pandemic restrictions, IT Admin has to be prepared for the possible need to return to full remote work. 

The main obligation of the administrator is to secure employee network traffic, increase data security and provide work accountability, according to Marcin Matuszewski. I would also like to draw attention to the fact that sometimes a parent may make their company equipment available to their child or spouse, and this also affects the security of company data. The parent leaves the computer with the child who may click something inadvertently and cause the computer to become infected. In terms of security, the admins have to look very widely and educate employees - especially during home office, he explains.
